Choosing Your Instrument

Choosing Your Guitar

Selecting a proper instrument for guitar instruction is often expensive, but extremely necessary.  Please be aware of this before making application.

An acceptable guitar will cost a minimum of  $100.  A good to excellent guitar will cost more.  Remember, you usually get what you pay for.  A quality instrument is an investment that can last many years.  An inexpensive purchase will most often turn out to be a costly mistake.  Inexpensive guitars offered at discount stores look the same as more expensive instruments at first glance, but are not the quality you will want for class instruction.  These guitars will often warp, break, or become unusable within a few weeks or months if they are not strong enough to hold the tension of the strings.  Many are impossible to tune because they are not scaled properly.

Please shop with a reputable music dealer who will not only sell you a quality instrument, but can offer service after the sale, if it is needed.  I have visited several dealers in Dothan and Marianna.  The dealers I visited have acceptable to very nice instruments and will work with you to find one suitable for your child.  Some of the nicer guitars found were:

Taylor (The Baby Taylor is a smaller guitar that is great for children.)

Alvarez (Select from the smaller sized guitars.)

Yamaha (Student size)

Suzuki (Smaller size)

Austin (student size)

Fender (student size)

Johnson (student size)

We had problems last year with tuning and repairs on Excel and First Act Guitars, so PLEASE purchase another brand.

Art’s Music Shop – 1861 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama 334-793-1284

Band Room - Hwy. 90, Downtown Marianna

Bay’s Music -  Industrial Park, Marianna.

Metro Music – 4196 Montgomery Highway North, Dothan, Alabama 334-792-0883

Each student will need a 6-string guitar, case, Korg electronic guitar (not chromatic) tuner, and music texts.  Items that will improve posture, promote progress, and add comfort to practice include a  footrest, and guitar strap.  These items would be helpful, but are optional.  We have extra music stands that may be checked out for the year.
