Graceville Elementary Guitar Classes 

Beginning August 2006

 

We began offering guitar classes at Graceville Elementary in January of 2003. The class was a direct response to student interest in guitar.  We use six-string guitars for beginning instruction and interested parents should make arrangements to purchase a quality instrument and other required items from a reputable dealer for use in the class.  This class requires an investment of time and money for participation.  We encourage students who are serious about guitar instruction to apply for acceptance into the class

 

Students/Parents will be expected to provide:

1.Six-string guitar of proper size for student.  Make sure the instrument is not

too large for the student.  Please see attached list for guitar suggestions.  PLEASE

do not purchase a guitar from a discount store such as Walmart or Sam's.   

2.)Guitar case with attached luggage tag for identification.

3.)Korg Guitar tuner DO NOT purchase a chromatic tuner!  They are great for older

students, but elementary students have difficulty learning to use them! (list $25,

available for less if  you look around)

4.)Guitar texts may be purchased at a music store or at GES for approximately $25:  

    We will use: 

        FJH Young Beginner Guitar Method Lesson Book with CD 1 ($9.95)  

        FJH Young Beginner Guitar Method Exploring Chords Book ($4.95) 

        FJH Young Beginner Guitar Method Theory Activity Book 1 ($5.50)

5.)Transportation to and from school on class meeting days.  (Guitars will not

be allowed on school buses.)

6.)Optional but very helpful:  Footrest

 

Rehearsals will begin promptly at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning of each week, beginning August 25.   It is necessary to have parental permission before applying for membership.  Parents must provide transportation for students participating in the class, since buses do not arrive until 7:30 a.m.  Parents will also need to provide transportation to get instruments home.  Only those students with parental permission will be considered for acceptance in the class. Students should return the attached form to Mrs. Bouton as soon as possible. 

 

Selection for membership will be based on observations in music.  Evaluation will include self-control in all situations, following directions, and instrumental skills.  Practice at home will be an absolute necessity.  Progress will not occur without practice.  Students should plan to practice a minimum of 15 minutes per day in August and September.  By the end of the first semester, each student should be practicing at least 30 minutes per day.
